Undercover Angels

drunken manOne day after dancing with 50 people, we all sat together in a circle to share closing remarks.

One man stood up, half-drunken or under the influence of some unfathomable substance, and, with a slurred voice, began sharing. ?And sharing. ?And sharing. ?This man went on, tangent after tangent, speaking with no awareness of his audience, speaking as if this were his only chance to be heard.

As time past, some in the circle stood up and left. ?Some rolled their eyes and some listened, hesitantly or not. ?But for some strange reason, no one asked him to stop.

One man from the circle stood out–he actually engaged with the other man, laughed at his jokes, and asked questions.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity but was probably just 15 minutes, the rambling man finished. ?There was silence for some time.

Those who had chosen to stay in the circle and endure his monologue looked exhausted, relieved, frustrated, and offended.

But the one man who had engaged with the rambling man’s speech was glowing. ?He spoke to the group:

“My father once told me that

if you listen to someone as if an angel is speaking to you, everything changes.”

Something invisible shifted in the room with those words, and what had before been an unpleasant experience became a breakthrough.

We are all undercover angels, tucking our wings into our underwear, walking the Earth with the clumsy grace of a human being.

Halos hidden beneath golden, bronze, and ebony locks, we leave traces of fairy dust behind with our every step.

What if we were all to treat each other as angels, as precious beings who have been sent from beyond with a message, a gift to share with us?

What if we were to treat ourselves as if there was an angel inhabiting our own body?

Would we treasure our every longing, kiss every tear as it fell across our lips? ?Would we bless every bite of food that entered our body, the house of this angel? ?Would we be humbled by our shortcomings and awed by our great capacity to love?

How would the trajectory of our lives change if we were clear of our purpose as angels on this Earth–here to live and love–and completely trusted the unique course our angel-lives took?

For indeed, there is an angel inhabiting each of our bodies, a spirit whose greatest potential is nothing short of divine.

Try it for a day. ?You are an undercover angel.? Your mission: to live your full potential, to breathe love into life. ?Undress the doubt and smallness constricting your wings as you untuck them and spread them wide.

Fly.
